Tags & Metadata

Architecture often requires cross-cutting categorization that does not fit neatly into a single ArchiMate layer or hierarchical tree. Tags in Kyb let you attach lightweight, color-coded labels to elements, relationships, and classes for filtering, compliance audits, and governance tracking.

Creating & Configuring Tags

Tags can be created on the fly from any tag picker in the entity or relationship details panel, or managed centrally in project settings. Every tag includes:

  • Name & Slug: A human-readable identifier (e.g. PCI-DSS, Mission Critical, Phase 1).
  • Description: Clear guidance on what the tag represents and when architects should apply it.
  • Classification Scopes: Fine-grained controls limiting where the tag can be applied.

Tag Application Scopes

To prevent accidental miscategorization, tags can be scoped to specific architectural primitives:

Elements

Attachable to systems, services, databases, processes, and cloud resources. Ideal for lifecycle stages, compliance tiers, or operational SLAs.

Relationships

Attachable to connections between elements. Useful for protocol flags (e.g. mTLS, Async, Synchronous HTTP).

Classes

Attachable to custom ontology classes and metamodel types to categorize definitions across your organization.

Canvas Display & Visual Badges

When Show Tags is enabled in the display options menu, applied tags render as colored badges directly beneath the node header on the canvas. This allows stakeholders to instantly scan for compliance boundaries or critical infrastructure without clicking into individual panels.

Filtering & Query Studio Integration

Tags serve as first-class filters throughout Kyb:

  • Entity Browser: Filter the sidebar list of elements by one or more active tags.
  • Query Studio: Select tags in visual query steps to find all systems tagged with compliance flags or specific project phases.
  • Saved Queries: Categorize your queries themselves with tags for quick retrieval.
